As users fill out your online forms, they follow real world conventions for entering their addresses. Incorrectly designing a form’s address entry fields can confuse and frustrate users, resulting in unnecessary data errors. Most online shopping carts and checkout processes include an additional form field for address line 2. This is where you would typically enter secondary address designators like apartment, suite or space numbers. In addition, many online forms require a second line of address for PO boxes, ATTN, company name or C/O.
Address line 1 should be populated with the street name and number, city and state or zip code. Then address line 2 is where you’d put the abbreviation for a house (typically written as “Apt.” or #1). Then for apartments, you’d add in the apartment number in line 3.
Including an optional address line 2, especially when it’s not required by USPS, can result in confusion and error at the time of checkout. It can also make it more difficult for your address validation software to properly process the address because the data isn’t structured correctly. It’s important to get the address data as close to the USPS standards as possible, as this will lead to cleaner and more accurate validated results.
